Yesterday: High: 81, Low: 74, officially 2.81 inches of rain, and we got a pretty steady soak all morning long from TS Eduoard at m house
I have told you about my second raised bed, the one my husband filled with mulch instead of soil. I tried to grow things in it. Finally a while back, I gently pulled all my plants out of the bed, scraped back the top couple of inches of mulch and put down a bag of potting soil, good stuff for containers. Then I gently replanted, scraped the mulch back around the plants, and waited. And watered. And waited. And hoped. And soaked.
I am not a Master Gardener. I am merely a girl who grew up around a mom with a green thumb. Most of it did not actually rub off. I have killed cacti. But I know that I need to do research, and I know that I should listen to good advice. So I do. One of the things that I remember my mother telling me is to really soak your pants when you water them. Barely sprinkling the water on top will make the roots only spread out just under the surface (which is fine if the plant is a cactus), but deep soaking will make the roots grow deep, which will make a stronger root system, and a healthier plant. In this case I REALLY needed those roots to grow down and, pardon the pun, hit paydirt.
Finally this week, it looks like they did. You can see the spindly yellowish leaves on my basil plant, topped by a luscious new growth of what actually looks like basil leaves you would want to eat.
