Yesterday: High: 89, Low: 81, 0.1″ preciptation somewhere else in the city, but at least the heavy cloud cover kept it cool

My cherry tomato plants. After an ABUNDANT harvest of cucumbers last year, and tomato plants that look like this, I am encouraged that I have the right sort of situation for easily growing veggies and herbs for my family.
August is half over, which means it is time to really get a plan together for the fall. According to Urban Harvest, a wonderful local gardening organization, now is the time to get my raised beds in order and prepped for fall planting (so, adding SOIL! *grins*), and to start buying seeds. They also recommend a couple of types of beans that can be planted right now, but I’m not sure if we would like to eat them.
One recommendation I will be taking is to plant salad greens next month. I want to try Mizuna (because I have a slight Japanese kick going), and at least two other salad greens. And some carrots. My kids love carrots. I think I am going to try some regular carrots (Nantes varieties are supposed to do especially well here), and maybe some different ones, too, like purple or white!
Imagine DD opening her lunch to slices of purple carrot!
So by the end of the month, I need to buy soil and seeds. Lettuce and carrots.
