Yesterday: High: 91, Low: 75, about half an inch of rain officially, seems about right for the 2 afternoon showers we had here
It has been a long dry summer so far, but finally it seems the rains have come. The sky has been cloudy, then overcast, then threatening, and finally it seems that it will come through on its threats.
I have been working out a planting schedule (get broccoli seedlings at the nursery for my birthday in early November and transplant them) to know what I will be growing in the next few months and then I will work out a layout, probably by the end of the weekend. I am going to give a modified square foot gardening approach a try. That way I can remember to seed my lettuces in succession without wondering where the row ended. Same with carrots. DH is going to be getting me my soil this weekend, and I am going to save kitchen waste to amend it, via the trench method, for the next couple of weeks. The waste won’t turn to compost quick enough for the fall and winter crops, but it will be lovely for the spring crops, and by then all the good stuff in the store bought soil will have been used (although some will be put back, as I plan on planting some peas as cover crop for the winter.
I saw an interesting idea in an old gardening magazine my mom gave me. This guy was growing crops in raised beds, and he basically kept one fallow each year and used it as his compost bin. Interesting idea. I might have to look into that when I get my third raised bed. Toss stuff in for composting all year, throw on a couple inches of soil in the fall and cover crop and it should be perfect in spring. Hmmmm . . .
