Companion Planting

Yesterday: High: 86, Low: 74, almost an inch of rain reported, and that seems about right for the house, too. Kind of upset me as I had watered in the morning. :) Full Moon tonight.

Companion planting is an old gardening technique. I mean OLD. It has been practiced for thousands of years. One of the most famous (at least in America) types of companion planting is Three Sisters planting, practiced by Native Americans. Corn was grown on top of a mound, and beans were grown around the stalks, then trained up them, and squash was grown around the beans and corn to shade the ground and help with weed prevention. Each plant helping out the others.

There are other combinations of companions. There are many plants which, although they are beautiful or tasty to us, most pests can’t stand the smell of, like marigolds and onions. I plan on taking full advantage of this technique in my garden. Here is an excellent list of companion plants.

Pest deterring companion plants I am planning on planting in my garden this fall:
Marigolds
Onions
Garlic
Cilantro
